He drives the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Hendrick Motorsports full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. He won both the 2017 NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship and the 2017 Sunoco Rookie of the Year the following season. Byron was also named the Sunoco Rookie of the Year in the 2018 MENCS. William Byron, the reigning NASCAR champion, has risen through the ranks of professional car racing faster than anyone in modern memory. With a new crew chief, an iconic No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 race car, and assistance from Hendrick Motorsports, the driver wants to improve on his 2018 rookie of the year performance in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Byron, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, has achieved an outstanding list of accomplishments despite just having driven a race car for the first time six years ago. After winning his fourth straight rookie of the year award, he continues to add to his already outstanding racing resume. But in 2019, Byron will race on the track without the yellow rookie stripe on his rear bumper for the first time in his NASCAR career. Byron, then 18, was signed by Hendrick Motorsports in August 2016 as a record-breaking rookie in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series.

About Victories & Career

He achieved seven victories, 3,248 laps led, and three pole positions by the end of his debut season with Kyle Busch Motorsports, en way to rookie of the year accolades. Byron had the most successful debut season in series history, despite missing out on the championship due to an engine problem. Byron moved up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2017, when he won the series championship and also achieved four wins, two pole positions, 12 top-five finishes, 22 top-10s, and rookie of the year for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports.

His championship-winning season included victories at Iowa, ISM Raceway, Daytona International Speedway, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he became the track’s youngest big race winner in its 108-year history. Hendrick Motorsports revealed Byron’s next – and biggest – career move in August 2017, as he was competing for a title in the Xfinity Series. He’d not only advance to the elite NASCAR Cup Series, but he’d do it in the iconic No. 24 Chevrolet driven by four-time Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon and his legendary Rainbow Warriors team.

Byron begins his rookie season in 2018 at the same age that Gordon did in 1992 when he made his Cup debut at the age of 20. Byron, like Gordon, went on to win rookie of the year, becoming only the second driver in NASCAR history to win rookie of the year in each of the three national series in consecutive seasons. Byron will attempt to expand on his first season’s experience in 2019, with the help of his newly recruited veteran crew chief, Chad Knaus, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion.

Byron became interested in NASCAR as a child and urged his father to take him to his first race, which took place at Martinsville Speedway in 2006. He quickly evolved into a student of the sport after becoming a regular on iRacing, an online racing simulator utilized by many professional drivers. In the summer of 2012, his father took Byron to the headquarters of U.S. Legend Cars International in Harrisburg, North Carolina, to learn about an affordable and accessible option to begin real-world racing.

They went to a race at Concord Speedway, which proved what Byron’s father already suspected: his 14-year-old son was all in. Nobody could have imagined what happened next. In 2013, Byron began participating in the United States Legend Young Lion Division, winning over half of the 69 legend car events he competed in across the country. On his road to the 2013 U.S. Legend Young Lions National Championship and the 2013 Thursday Thunder Young Lions championship at Atlanta Motor Speedway, he won 33 races in all. It was his first year behind the wheel of a race car.

After winning races and championships in two winter series the Winter Nationals at Auburndale Speedway and the Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway Byron moved up from the Legends Young Lion Division to the Legends Pro Division at the end of 2013. In 2014, he signed with JR Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team, to compete regionally in full-size stock cars. In 30 starts for JRM, Byron rapidly adjusted to late model stock cars, gaining one win, seven poles, and 15 top-five finishes.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Series, his success at Hickory Motor Speedway and Caraway Speedway earned him the North Carolina rookie of the year title. Byron’s meteoric rise continued in 2015 when he competed in 36 races across four series – ARCA, NASCAR K&N Pro, CARS Super Late Model Tour, and NASCAR Whelen All-American – and earned six victories, five poles, and 19 top-five finishes, as well as the K&N Pro Series East championship and rookie of the year honors.
