Testing Techniques
There are numerous varieties of wiper blades available, making it difficult to determine which is best. To precisely analyze the performance of each wiper, I used my 2015 Volkswagen GTI as a testbed. To conduct a repeatable experiment, I painted my windshield using a three-to-one mixture of washable paint and water before clearing it away with each wiper blade. I kept turning on the wipers until the path was absolutely clean and no sign of paint could be seen. I washed and dried the windshield with auto soap before and after each test, then squeegeed and dried the leftover water.
I used a powerful garden sprayer to make sure I used the same amount of paint on the windshield every time. Between each run, 35 cycles of depressurizing and repressurizing were performed. When it came time to paint, I went up and down, then side to side, in a cross-hatch technique to achieve the best coverage. After that, I compared the noise levels on a semi-dry windshield, because squeaking windshield wipers are the last thing you want to hear while driving in light rain. I started by removing around 80% of the water from the windshield with a squeegee. Instead of drying the glass after wiping it clean, I left the remaining 20% of the water on it.
