While Anthony is under pressure to carry on the Bridgerton tradition, Benedict and Colin, the next eldest brothers, have greater freedom, which Benedict takes advantage of in season two by following his passion for art. “I suppose it’s probably why I became an actress in the first place: it’s all a big game of what you reveal and what you hide as an actor.” What you conceal is actually just as crucial as what you expose. “What’s so fun about a guy like Benedict is that he has this sense of mystery,” Thompson explains.
“Part of the mystery stems from the fact that he isn’t in the spotlight. He’s leaning at the back of the ballroom, a grin on his face, judging individuals and thinking sarcastic thoughts about them. He’s available to the audience in part, but not entirely, and that’s a lot of fun to play because it allows you to really relax into it. There’s no need to expose everything in a single season. You have the feeling that you can take your time and gently grow and develop the character, and I would say that the character is a little bit of a mystery to himself and others.”
