Early life
Thomas John Woodward was born in 57 Kingsland Terrace, Treforest, Pontypridd, in Glamorgan, South Wales. Thomas Woodward (31 March 1910 – 5 October 1981) and Freda Jones (30 December 1914 – 7 February 2003) were his parents. His paternal grandfather, James Woodward, was an ironmonger’s haulier from Gloucestershire and his paternal grandmother, Anne Woodward, was from Wiltshire. They were born in Pontypridd to parents who had emigrated from Somerset and Wiltshire, and his maternal grandfather was Welsh.
At Wood Road Infants School, Wood Road Junior School, and Pontypridd Central Secondary Modern School, Jones honed his academic and athletic skills. He started singing at a young age, performing at family events, weddings, and in his school chorus. Singing helped Jones overcome his dislike of school and sports. Diagnosed with tuberculosis at the age of 12, he died. He said this many years later: “My recovery took two years, and I was confined to a bed for most of that time. At that point in my life, it was the worst period of my life.” He was confined to listening to music and drawing while he recovered from his injuries.

During Morrissey’s special show in the United States in May 2014, Jones was the opening act. AFL pre-game entertainment for the 2014 Grand Final on September 27, 2014, included Jones and Ed Sheeran. Jones announced in September 2015 that his long-awaited album Long Lost Suitcase would be released on October 9th via Virgin/EMI. Following Praise & Blame (2010) and Spirit in the Room (2007), this is the third album in a trilogy (2012).
In conjunction with the release of his autobiography Over the Top and Back, the album’s track titles were intertwined with the book’s chapters. It was produced by Ethan Johns and features songs by Gillian Welch, the Rolling Stones, Hank Williams, and the Milk Carton Kids, to name just a few of the many artists featured. A 90-minute special for BBC Children in Need was hosted by Jones and Rob Brydon at the SSE Arena, Wembley in November 2015. Jones and Linda (née Melinda Rose Trenchard, born 1941) were married from March 2, 1957, to April 10, 2016, when Linda passed away. Despite his several well-publicized affairs, they remained married. A son, Mark Woodward (born 1957), and two grandchildren were born to the marriage (Alex and Emma). At the height of his success, Jones admitted to having sex with as many as 250 women a year. Linda assaulted him once because of his infidelity. Many famous women, including Mary Wilson of the Supremes, TV anchor Charlotte Laws, and former Miss World Marjorie Wallace, had affairs with Jones. Cassandra Peterson stated in an interview with Blender magazine in 2008 that she had sex with Jones.
A single fling led to the birth of a child. During a US tour in October 1987, Jones had an affair with model Katherine Berkery, who later found out she was pregnant. In 1989, a United States court ruled that Jones was the boy’s father following a legal struggle that included DNA testing. In 2008, Jones ultimately recognised that the court’s findings were correct. He has shown no interest in meeting Jonathan Berkery, the son he adopted. After a “brief but strong” battle with cancer, Lady Woodward died on April 10 at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, with Jones cancelling gigs at the time.
Jones returned to the UK after selling their Los Angeles mansion and all of its contents except for a few priceless photos. As she predicted, he lives in a London apartment. For his well-being, Jones has confirmed that he does inversion therapy as of 2021. Rumors of Jones’ relationship with Priscilla Presley surfaced a few years after Linda’s death. According to an open statement by him in 2021, both of them had known each other since the early Sixties. When they went out to eat with each other, some people thought they were dating. However, they were just friends who liked spending time together and didn’t have a sexual relationship at all.
