On September 17, 1965, Billie Jean and Larry King were married in Long Beach, California. Aside from exposing Billie Jean to feminism, Larry was a major influence on her decision to pursue a career in tennis. When Billie Jean and Larry got married, she declared she was “completely in love” with him. Toward the end of 1968, King learned that she had a preference for females.
When Marilyn Barnett, her secretary, first approached her about a romance in 1971, she agreed (born Marilyn Kathryn McRae on January 28, 1948). Marilyn Barnett has been residing in Billie Jean and Larry King’s Malibu home rent-free for the past few years. Barnett was ordered to leave the King’s mansion in 1979, but he refused to do so. To keep her and her ex-husband apart, Barnett vowed to leak financial information and receipts she had kept over the years. While Barnett was still pursuing his lawsuit against King in March 1983, his house was wrecked by a freak winter storm that hit the southern California coast.
