Production
Development: On the direction and scripting of the series, Tom Tykwer, Hendrik Handloegten, and Achim von Borries worked together. For the first two seasons, Tykwer, von Borries, and Handloegten adapted Volker Kutscher’s book Der nasse Fisch (The Wet Fish). The 16 episodes were shot over the course of eight months starting in May 2016. The German public broadcaster ARD and the premium television network Sky jointly produced the program for the first time.
This movie, which was largely based on the novels of German author Volker Kutscher, was written, produced, and directed by Tom Tykwer, Achim von Borries, and Hendrik Handloegten. The series starts in Berlin in 1929, during the end of the Weimar Republic. The two main characters of the movie are Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries), a police clerk who aspires to be an inspector, and Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch), a police inspector from Cologne. On October 13th of this year, the show debuted on Sky 1, a German-language entertainment channel owned by Sky Deutschland. Eight episodes of the first season were referred to as Season 1 and the remaining eight were as Season 2.
On January 24th, 2020, Sky 1 premiered a brand-new 12-episode cycle with the official title “Season 3.” Season 4 of the show, which takes place in the winter of 1930–1931, was filmed in 2021 and will air in 2022. The only place to view the series is on Netflix in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The citations mentioned above state that the series was initially shown by Sky before starting its free-to-air broadcasts on September 30th, 2018, as stipulated in the agreement. Due to Netflix’s acquisition of the rights, the series was made available in 2018 in the United States, Canada, and Australia with English dubbing and subtitles. The series’ budget increased from €40 million to €55 million as a result of reshoots, making it Germany’s most expensive television drama series.
Upcoming Seasons
The third season of Babylon Berlin was filmed during a six-month period from the end of 2018 to May 2019. During the 32nd European Film Awards in December 2019, the showrunners Achim von Borries, Henk Handloegten, and Tom Tykwer stated that the third season was in post-production and that a fourth season was in the works. The third season was loosely based on Volker Kutscher’s second book in his trilogy, The Silent Death. In order to effectively examine the social and political instability that characterized the Weimar Republic at the time, the series’ authors made the decision to depart from the original material.
The Black Reichswehr and Communist political organizations rise to prominence during the Black Tuesday stock market crash of late 1929, as well as the advent of talkies. Production on the fourth season would probably start at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, actress Liv Lisa Fries indicated in a January 2020 interview with Berliner Zeitung. In October 2020, preparation and writing for the fourth season, which will be based on the book Goldstein, began. The production took place over 129 days in Studio Babelsberg and in the Berlin area. Locations
Babelsberg Studio expanded its Metropolitan Backlot significantly for the filming of the series and upcoming productions. It is believed to be the largest permanent set in all of Europe. This collection includes images from several neighborhoods in Berlin that illustrate various social tiers. Included is also the nightclub Moka Efti’s exterior. The series was also filmed in Berlin and the neighboring state of Brandenburg. Numerous shots were filmed on Alexanderplatz in front of the historic Alexanderhaus.
The Berlin City Hall (Rotes Rathaus), with its red brick color and distinctive architectural design, served as the backdrop for the majority of close-up scenes showcasing the police headquarters’ façade. Numerous scenes, notably those involving the paternoster elevator in the police headquarters lobby, were shot at Rathaus Schöneberg while the excellent Ratskeller restaurant in the same structure served as the neighboring café Aschinger.
Music
In order to perform the program’s unique music, a house band called the Moka Efti Orchestra was established in 2018. Ragtime to klezmer is both included in the band’s repertoire. There are fourteen people in the Moka Efti Orchestra, which takes its name from the nightclub in Babylon Berlin where Svetlana Sorokina performs. Severija Januauskait, a Lithuanian actress, plays Svetlana. In the opening double episode of the first season, Januauskaite’s character, a transgender guy named Nikoros, sings the show’s theme song, “Zu Asche, Zu Staub,” in the Moka Efti cabaret. When this song was later released, German singles charted it and it reached the top 50.
Broadcast
The series debuted on January 30th, 2018 in Australia, Canada, and the United States. (Netflix). The first Das Erste television broadcasts will go live on September 30, 2018. The first episode of the Swedish broadcast debuted on June 19, 2019, on SVT. Following early rumors of a late 2019 premiere, the third season debuted in Germany on Sky 1 in January 2020 and on the German public television network ARD in October 2020. Early in 2019, more than a hundred nations, including Netflix, HBO Europe, and Viaplay, purchased the rights to the third season’s international distribution. The whole third season of the show was made available on Netflix in all regions on March 1, 2020.
Episodes
Both the first and second seasons of the Kutscher book series, which each included eight episodes, were based on the first novel in the series. When they first aired, they were distributed globally in a single block with the numbers 1 through 16. Additionally, both of the show’s seasons were simultaneously available on Netflix. Eight double-length episodes made up a season that was shown in many nations. The second 12 episodes will be referred to as Season 2 and the first 12 as Season 3 in those regions where the first 12 episodes debuted as one block.
