As revealed in the sixth episode of Season 2, she was an athlete in high school before becoming hooked on opioids due to an accident. Eventually, her addiction led her to a life of crime, even though she was a schoolteacher at the time. The series’ Laurie is played by Martha Kelly. Rue yells and kicks the door repeatedly until it opens in her desperation to learn where her medicines are. Leslie and Gia are both sobbing in unison by this point. Rue collapses on the floor, overcome with emotion and tears of regret. And we’re only five and a half minutes into the video. Zendaya’s performance as Rue is startling and painful to witness, but that’s only a credit to her commitment and unhindered approach to her character’s development. In what way was Morphine used by Laurie?
Rue is desperate at this point. Leaving the luggage at home, she heads over to Laurie’s and spills the beans on what’s transpired. Despite her lack of money, she offers the stolen jewels as a kind of payment. Rue is given morphine by Laurie to ease the pain of withdrawal. To treat pain that is too severe to be controlled by other pain drugs, morphine is commonly used. Laurie appears to have taken advantage of Rue by administering another dangerously addictive drug to alleviate her withdrawal symptoms and put her to sleep.
The Escape of Rue
Rue runs away from home as her mother drives her back to rehab. When she arrives at Fez’s house, she discovers he isn’t there, so she proceeds to Howard’s. In the restroom, Rue steals jewelry right in front of Lexi, Cassie, and Maddy. The plot intensifies as her mother appears just as she is about to leave. “One day at a time,” which is a famous adage in Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous, was Cassie’s advice to Rue. When Rue notices this, she seizes the chance to devise a plan to flee. When she reveals that Cassie had sex with Nate after the New Year’s Eve party, Maddy becomes enraged and pursues Cassie. Rue makes a second escape and returns to Fez’s house, where he expels her without explanation.
Breaking and entering another house, she takes more jewels and is pursued by the police. “I knew you were going to be in my life for a very long time,” Laurie, who calls Rue by her full name, Ruby, tells Rue. “I knew you were going to be in my life.” This is a reference to her earlier words in which she said she would kidnap Rue and sell her body to recoup the money. After waking up in Laurie’s house, Rue finds herself trapped inside, but she manages to escape and meet her mother at the kitchen table.
