Somers began his professional television career on July 14, 1971, when he took over as the host of an afternoon children’s show called Cartoon Corner, which had previously been presented by James Kemsley and was formerly known as Skeeter’s Cartoon Corner (who went on to draw the famous Ginger Meggs comic strip for 23 years).

He introduced himself as Daryl Somers with the following words: “Hi, I’m Daryl Somers, Skeeter will no longer be with us, and now it’s time for a cartoon.” Mr. Magoo was the subject of his audition, which consisted of him doing an imitation of the character. To appear on the program, he was paid $75 each week.

The series’ distinctive brand of irreverent humor quickly attracted a large adult audience, and by 1984, it had grown in popularity to the point where Nine made the unprecedented decision to move it to a 9:30 Saturday evening timeslot and renamed it Hey Hey It’s Saturday Night, which was a hit with the public. It continued to air on Saturday nights for the remainder of its existence, but in 1985 it was relocated to the 6:30 p.m. time slot and ultimately returned to the moniker Hey Hey It’s Saturday as well.

It was one of the most successful and continuously high-rated shows in the history of Australian television, and it received many accolades, including three Gold Logie Awards for Somers, at its peak. Hey, Hey was a television show that aired on the Nine Network in Australia for 28 years (1971–99). It had by that time established itself as a cultural institution, thus it came as a huge shock when the Nine Network announced that the series would be canceled at the end of 1999.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday premiered on the 9th of October, 1971, later that year. Somers began co-hosting with footballer Peter McKenna, but after eight weeks, his co-host was replaced by the pink hand-puppet Ossie Ostrich, which was controlled by former In Melbourne Tonight staff writer Ernie Carroll. Somers’ initial co-host was footballer Peter McKenna.

McKenna was on the program for a long period of time after that. Originating as a Saturday morning children’s cartoon show, the program rapidly grew in both size and breadth as it gained popularity. As the show progressed, more cast members were added, including booth announcer John Blackman, who also provided voice work for a large number of (unseen) characters, and subsequently, co-host Jacki MacDonald.
