The network is expected to announce on Friday that the time-jumping family tear-jerker from creator Dan Fogelman would end its run during the upcoming 2021-22 broadcast season, according to sources.

Despite this, Fogelman maintains that This Is Us has reached its “middle point,” and he isn’t willing to modify his mind. Showrunner Dan Fogelman and co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have already stated that the show’s format will not allow it to continue as long as NBC’s veteran procedurals. We didn’t plan on developing a show that would run for 18 seasons at the start, so we have a pretty straightforward strategy.” I’ve written and am currently drafting pages for screenplays that date back a long, long time. Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, and Chrissy Metz have all been nominated for Emmys for their performances in the drama series. Karey Burke, the new CEO of Disney 20th Television, who has been courting Fogelman for some time, has just signed a multi-year overall contract with the show’s creator. Meanwhile, co-creators Aptaker and Berger have Love, Victor on Hulu and recently received a straight-to-series order for a spinoff of the famous CBS sitcom How I Met Your Father. Both programs are produced by 20th Television as part of a larger contract.

This Is Us is the second NBC scripted drama to end during the 2021-22 broadcast season, following former Fox comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which will end with a reduced and delayed eighth season. The news comes on the heels of NBC’s decision to cancel Superstore for the current season. With This Is Us and Brooklyn joining the returning lineup, NBC has already finalized the majority of its renewal selections for the upcoming season.
The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, Law & Order: SVU, New Amsterdam, and the comedies Kenan, Mr. Mayor, and Young Rock are among this week’s top picks (all from NBC). Good Girls, Manifest, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and newcomer Debris are all in peril this season, but Law & Order: Organized Crime is almost certain to return in its current form. Because of the pandemic’s late start, the midseason schedule may be pushed back.
Gods (Starz)
After three seasons, American Gods was canceled. Starz is investigating a potential event series or movie to tie up the saga. Neil Gaiman’s work was adapted by Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane. American Gods’ low ratings and stories of behind-the-scenes conflict didn’t surprise anyone.
Homemaker (ABC)
After five seasons, ABC discontinued American Housewife. The veteran sitcom was canceled in May after behind-the-scenes upheaval, including Carly Hughes’ departure over a toxic work climate and racial harassment. Ali Wong was also likely to leave after earning a lead role on Amazon. March’s finale aired.
