Throughout her childhood, Tia Torres dreamed of starting her own family. Tia’s traumatic beginnings in a broken household led to her early adoption of strays and neighborhood canines. Because she lacked a father figure in her youth, her mother instilled in her the value of having a close animal partner. It wasn’t until the age of 17 that Tia left home with an entourage of dogs and even ended up homeless. Since joining the Army, Tia has been a truck driver, then worked as a LA adolescent gang counselor, which furthered her interest in working with those who straddle the boundary between legality and illegality.
Dealing in housing projects and drug homes eventually led her to a career of working with parolees. Tania and Mariah, Tia’s two daughters, have been a constant source of encouragement and support. It was at the Los Angeles Animal Shelter, when Tia first met her future dog “Tatanka,” that Tia’s love for animals was reignited. Tia continued to work to dispel the myth that wolves and pit bulls are vicious and unloving creatures, despite the media’s portrayal of them as such. Owning the help of Los Angeles City Animal Services, Tia founded “The Pit Bull Support Group,” which offered assistance to anyone with a Pit Bull or Pit Mix.

It was Tia’s first official parolee job and she took in twin adolescent boys who were in need of direction and later adopted them, sparing them from an unsatisfactory home life called Kanani and Moe. As the Villalobos Rescue Center grew, it became a shelter for both canines and humans. Tia made the choice to relocate the Villalobos Rescue Center to New Orleans in 2010 when Villalobos was on the verge of bankruptcy in Los Angeles.
Tania
Tania, Tia’s eldest child, has had a difficult childhood, but she shares her mother’s passion for animals. Tania worked in the film industry as an assistant animal trainer when she was in her late teens. She’d meet wolves in the Mongolian desert and the stars of “The Jungle Book” in Costa Rica’s jungles, among other exotic locales. Tania and her siblings have always been a part of Tia’s life, and they’ve made Villalobos, the largest pit bull rescue in the country, their home. In addition, she is the author of the children’s book “Lulu & Clementine,” based on one of her dogs and her loving daughter, Salem-Wolf.
Mariah
When Mariah was old enough to walk on a leash, she adopted her first pit bull, L.A. She was an extremely outgoing child. She was always eager to get her hands dirty with the dogs, but she was always able to maintain her appearance for beauty pageant competitions. When she was eight years old, Mariah spoke before the LA City Commission, the mayor, and a crowd of hundreds to discuss spray/neuter regulations. Throughout her speech, she discusses issues including pit bull rights, dogfighting, and the unfair stereotypes that surround this breed.

The Villalobos group rallies around veteran resident Lil Rocky as he faces a cancer scare. PIT BULLS & PAROLEES will return to Animal Planet on April 24 at 9 p ET for new episodes, which will air on Saturdays. Pit Bulls & Parolees, currently in its sixth season on Animal Planet, tells the story of how Tia Torres and her team of parolees work to save pit bulls. However, the Villalobos Rescue Center was saved by the reality TV show. A profile in LA Magazine in 2007 sparked interest from producers. She accepted yes despite the fact that she is a private person who has previously declined requests to publish books about her life.
‘We were on the point of becoming broke,’ Tia said, ‘and it came down to survival. We had to eat since a lot of real people wanted to be actors. So we were about to shut down the rescue because my kids and I were relying on donated food from churches and other organizations. “We’ll have to do this,” I said. Due to the belief that “they’re going to get us,” they chose 44 Blue Productions, which also produced Cell Dogs and Lockup (and also produces Wahlburgers, among other series). They’re “with us all year round,” since “we film honestly,” she explained. Neither script nor set-up is necessary; everything just happens. “We film every week, for the entire year.”
Although the show was originally intended to focus on her employees rather than her, networks insisted that she appear because “either you’re in it, or the show isn’t going to go.” Because of how desperate we were, my family and I as well as the parolees couldn’t wait for production to start so we could eat the food they brought in for catering. Pet food and vet expenditures were made easier by Tia’s work at Animal Planet, according to her. We had nothing to watch on television, thus there was little to watch. Every one of my bank accounts was in the red.
