The Finest Air Fryer Available

When we first tested air fryers in 2017, the bulk of them looked like they belonged on a science fiction set rather than a kitchen counter. Under the guise of a fashionable new name, “air frying,” they employed the same process as convection baking. Some manufacturers have started dubbing their convection toaster ovens and electric ranges “air fryer ovens” to stay on trend since then. The Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven TOB-260N1 predates the air-fryer craze (there’s no mention of it on the box), but we believe it delivers better results than any pod-shaped air fryer we’ve tried.

Although we believe the Cuisinart toaster oven offers the best value, size, and versatility in this category, we’ve discovered through commenters, customer reviews, and air fryer owners that many consumers prefer something smaller or want a separate machine for cooking frozen foods, meat, or veggies. With that in mind, we’ve decided to broaden our perspective on air fryers. If you don’t want to bake and just need to make one or two portions of food at a time instead of using a convection toaster oven, the Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96 is the best pod-shaped device we’ve tested. We looked at other low-cost gadgets in 2021 and came up with a budget pick: the Cosori Pro Air Fryer.

You can adapt toaster oven recipes for air Fryers

In terms of air frying, our top-rated toaster oven, the Cuisinart Chef’s Convection Toaster Oven TOB-260N1, outperformed all of the air fryers we’ve tested since 2017, and it also comes with more accessories. In our tests, the Cuisinart produced crispier, more evenly cooked food, and it can handle considerably more than a normal pod-shaped air fryer—up to nine slices of toast, a 6-pound chicken, a 9-inch pie or cake, or a 13-inch pizza, to name a few examples.

The world’s most powerful air fryer in the form of a pod

Although we prefer a convection toaster oven for this chore, if you’re on a budget, this device is an excellent option. We evaluated prepared food in all of the other pod-shaped devices in an unequal manner. The Philips HD9741/96, on the other hand, did not. If you have limited counter space or plan to cook only one or two meals at a time, a tiny, pod-shaped air fryer may be the way to go. The Philips Premium Airfryer HD9741/96 is the best pod-shaped air fryer we’ve tested. It takes up less space, is easier to use, and cooks food more evenly than competing models.

Because you can’t control or turn off its powerful convection fan, it’s not ideal for baking and can’t be used to make toast. With the exception of the “fryer” basket, all of the extras can be purchased separately. Many clients are likely to be pleased with a convection toaster oven’s larger cooking capacity and versatility. In conclusion, we recommend purchasing the Philips air fryer only if it is appropriate for your location and lifestyle.

The most cost-effective pod-shaped air fryer

This was the best air fryer we tested that cost less than $100. It has some of the same aesthetic features as the Philips model, but it cooks less evenly and has fewer precise settings. The Cosori Pro Air Fryer is a pod-shaped air fryer that is less expensive than the Philips model. Although it did not cook as evenly as the Philips in our tests, we judged its results to be perfectly satisfactory given its lower price. The Cosori has a lot of preprogrammed options, but some of them aren’t very accurate.

How did we do our Research?

We put the air fryers to the test in the following manner when we first published this article in 2017: We also made hand-cut frozen french fries and frozen finger appetizers to go with the pork chops. We chose to test the toaster-oven air fryers like we would typical toaster ovens for our 2019 update. We stuffed as many slices of white sandwich bread into each model as they would allow and used the toasted results as a heat map: Uneven browning in each oven alerted us to any hot regions.

We also made batches of frozen french fries and sampled them to see if any areas were undercooked or overcooked, as well as baked frozen breaded chicken tenders and fish sticks to see if they browned uniformly or had soggy bottoms. The last two models to be eliminated were a box mix of yellow cake and whole chickens, after which the remaining contestants were baked and roasted.

To compare the results, we ran all of these tests in our top-performing Philips Avance HD9641/96 pod-shaped air fryer from 2017, which has since been discontinued. We looked at a newer version of that device in 2021, the Philips Premium HD9741/96, which we now recommend as a replacement; the newer model produced results that were similar to the discontinued model.
