Infancy
On a farm near Shellbrook in Prince Albert, Moe was born the eldest of five children. The following year he returned to Saskatchewan and attended the University of Saskatchewan after briefly living in Yellowknife. A Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) is what he earned. Moe and his wife started a farming business in the mid-1990s while they were still in college, purchasing equipment and renting land. With $208,500 worth of assets and $320,900 worth of debts, Moe filed for bankruptcy in the early years of 2000.
He’s also owned a pharmacy and a couple of gas stations. Moe relocated to Vermillion, Alberta, where he worked as a farm equipment salesman following his bankruptcy. The Shellbrook and District Physician Recruitment Committee works to bring general practitioners to rural areas of Saskatchewan without easy access to local medical facilities. Since his return to Saskatchewan in 2003, he has been involved in a number of community initiatives in and around Shellbrook, including the Economic Development Corporation.
Moe was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol on two separate instances in the 1990s. In 1992, Moe was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol while under the age of 21. In 1994, Moe was accused of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident, both of which he had previously been charged with. In the end, the accusations were dropped.
It was May 29, 1997, when Moe was responsible for a car accident that claimed the life of a 39-year-old woman, Joanne Balog. Steve Balog, the father’s 18-year-old son, was the only other passenger and suffered dislocated ribs and lacerations in the incident. For driving without due care and attention, an RCMP investigation found that Moe had attempted to cross the highway when it was unsafe. Despite Moe’s claim that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, he also maintained that he could not remember it.

On June 5, 2014, Moe was sworn in as Environment Minister and Minister in Charge of SaskWater and the Water Security Agency of Saskatchewan. He was appointed Minister of Advanced Education on May 21, 2015. In the 2016 election, Moe was re-elected in Rosthern-Shellbrook, and on August 23, 2016, Moe was re-elected as Minister of Environment.

His position fell to fifth in the summer of 2020, however, as a result of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the spring, Moe discussed the possibility of an early election, but the 2020 provincial election was held in October as required by law. It was Moe’s first election since becoming prime minister. The Saskatchewan Party was re-elected to power on October 26th for the fourth time in a row with a majority of the vote. Since Tommy Douglas’ CCF government in the 1950s, no government in Saskatchewan has won four consecutive elections. In Rosthern-Shellbrook, where he received nearly 80% of the vote, Moe was re-elected.
Controversies
Crash victim’s death apologies: Joanne Balog’s boys claimed that Moe had never apologized to them for their mother’s death in a 1997 vehicle accident. According to Steve Balog, a victim of the tragedy, the identity of the at-fault motorist was only revealed to him after the Premier was questioned about it in public by reporters during the election campaign, and the police had not revealed this information to him immediately after the collision.

When Moe wrote a letter supporting the so-called Freedom Convoy protest in January 2022, he added fuel to the fire by calling for the removal of all COVID-related health measures in Canada.
Moe was thereafter the only Premier thanked in a news conference by convoy organizers. In his letter, Moe noted that an “unvaccinated trucker does not offer any greater danger of transmission than a vaccinated trucker.” This was one of the statements Moe made downplaying the effectiveness of vaccinations at preventing COVID transmission.
