Voters in the United Kingdom supported a referendum on the nation’s membership in the EU from 2013 to 2015. EU citizens currently residing in the UK will therefore need to apply for settled status in order to stay in the nation after Brexit. According to data from the Home Office published in October 2019, more than a million EU citizens still haven’t applied for settled status, which will allow them to stay in the UK. EU citizens who fail to apply for a settlement status by 2020 will be deported, according to Security Minister Brandon Lewis. After the application deadline, legal residents will progressively become undocumented immigrants.

In 2018, it was ruled that the EU’s “Charter of Fundamental Rights” would not be upheld in the event that the UK left the EU. As a result of this vote, if and when the UK leaves the EU, the Charter will no longer be enforceable under UK law. Additional rights are provided by the charter, such as the right to just working conditions, the right to protection from certain types of discrimination, the right to a minimum paid holiday, and rules about working hours and equal compensation.
