Neil Young Official Release Series
The ORS Vol 4 brings together a diverse range of sounds from across the decades. Hawks & Doves (1980) revisits his folk roots and explores some of his most country-leaning offerings; Re•ac•tor (1981) features Crazy Horse performing a stomping set of heavy, overdriven rock; and This Note’s for You (1988) portrays Young as a big band leader, belting out intricately arranged blues. Young is backed by The Restless on the Eldorado EP (1989), which is full of feral distortion and earthy crunch (Chad Cromwell and Rick Rosas).
Only at NYA can you find Young’s music in the highest possible digital audio resolution, as well as an almost limitless archive of files. It also houses The Times Contrarian, Young’s virtual daily newspaper, and The Hearse Theater, where you can see rare footage and watch live shows. Few artists, if any, have explored such a wide range of sounds and styles over more than half a century as Young, and NYA is a fittingly sprawling repository for him. ORS Vol 4 collects a wide range of his diverse and compelling work from the 1980s, demonstrating the legendary songwriter’s sonic shape-shifting ability.
Where analog tapes exist, this box set continues the chronological re-release of Neil Young’s official releases, remastered. Hawks & Doves from 1980 (ORS 13), ReAcTor (with Crazy Horse) from 1981 (ORS 14), This Notes for You from 1988 (ORS 20), and Eldorado from 1989 are included in Volume 4, which is available as a 4 LP box and 4 CD box (ORS 21). These albums span Neil’s Geffen Records tenure from 1982 to 1987, hence the non-sequential ORS numbers. Eldorado is a 5-track mini-album that was previously only available on CD in Australia and Japan, and it includes two highly sought-after tracks, “Cocaine Eyes” and “Heavy Love.”
