When Jama was 18 years old, he moved to London to pursue a career in the media, first as an actor, then as a TV personality, and eventually as a fashion model. Jama had meant to pursue a career as an actress at first, but she quickly realized that a job as a presenter would be a better fit. She presented her own BBC Radio 1 show, Maya Jama, on Fridays and Saturdays from 2018 until 2020. After a two-year stint on Radio 1, Jama will retire on May 15, 2020, according to the BBC. It said she’d “made the difficult choice not to renew her contract with Radio 1,” that her final show would air on May 3, 2020, and that she’d be missed.
