Kelly was born in Glasgow’s Gorbals neighborhood and grew up in the city. Lorraine is the descendant of a long line of Irish emigrants. Kelly’s mother was the daughter of a television repairman named John. Her family lived in Glasgow for her first few years before moving to East Kilbride, where she now attends Claremont High School. She worked as a reporter for the East Kilbride News in Glasgow before joining BBC Scotland as a researcher, and she turned down a university seat to study English and Russian. Kelly won the TRIC Diamond Jubilee Award for New Talent of the Year in April 1991. After being elected to the position in 2004, she was sworn in as the University of Dundee’s first female rector on April 28, 2004. She held this position from 2003 to 2007. For her charitable work, she got an honorary degree from the college in 2008. On June 28th, 2018, Edinburgh Napier University awarded her an honorary doctorate of arts. In the 2020 Birthday Honours, he was given the CBE for his contributions to radio, journalism, and philanthropy.
Kelly received a special Scottish BAFTA award on November 16, 2014, as a tribute to her 30 years on television. Kelly has been dubbed “one of Britain’s cult gay icons” by Attitude magazine. She got the “Honorary Gay Award” in 2015 for her support of the LGBT community. She has been an Honorary Colonel in the Army Cadet Force’s Black Watch battalion since June 2009. Since November of this year, she has served as the National Honorary Colonel of the Army Cadet Force.
