The tight-knit community of Twinsburg is grappling with the devastating loss of 9-year-old Koby Looman, son of Ryan Looman, the girls’ varsity basketball coach.

A tragic car accident unfolded in Geauga County on a fateful Sunday around 1:30 p.m., near the intersection of Ohio 608 and U.S. 6, leaving the community in shock and mourning the untimely passing of a beloved young member.

Superintendent Kathi Powers shared the heartbreaking news with the community through an emotional email, revealing that the accident had claimed the lives of not only Koby but also his parents, Ryan and Liz, along with their three other children.

The accident occurred as the Looman family’s Chevrolet SUV, heading south on Ohio 608, tragically swerved, colliding with a northbound Kia SUV on the same road.

Despite the swift response of emergency services, Koby Looman was pronounced deceased at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center in Claridon Township. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the remaining family members were not deemed life-threatening.

Ryan Looman, a respected figure in Twinsburg serving as the senior varsity girls’ basketball coach and assistant high school principal, is well-known and esteemed within the community. The school, deeply affected by this tragedy, has made counselors available to provide support to grieving staff and students.

The Twinsburg community, devastated by the loss, has rallied together to offer support. A GoFundMe page was established to assist the Looman family during this difficult time, and the outpouring of solidarity has resulted in donations exceeding $30,000.

In the GoFundMe account, the Loomans are described as a family “brimming with love, compassion, and altruism,” highlighting the impact they’ve had on the community. In the face of profound grief, the Twinsburg community once again realizes the fragility of life and the crucial role of unity during times of sorrow.

The school district, already mourning the loss of baseball coach Jeff Luca in a December crash, is now confronted with another tragic incident. As the community grapples with the emotional aftermath, there is yet to be confirmation regarding any changes to the upcoming schedule, emphasizing the need for community support during these trying times.

In the wake of this heart-wrenching incident, the Twinsburg community stands united, extending condolences, support, and affection to the Looman family as they navigate the challenging journey that lies ahead.
