How did you first become interested in quizzing, and what made you want to do it?
Quiz shows have always piqued my interest, and I used to like taking part in them when I was younger. I didn’t start regularly taking high-level quizzes until I started working in the government. After some thought, I chose to submit an application for Mastermind. In 1987, I made an appearance on the program, and I haven’t looked back since. I used to write professionally for BBC Radio 4’s Brain of Britain, and now I compose questions for Eggheads. There are several things working in my favor. The only people who can earn money from doing quizzes in the UK are those who feature on Eggheads or The Chase.
How long do you spend Researching?
My memory, though, is not photographic. I’ll need to rehydrate and recharge. I’ve seen lists of tournament winners previously because I’m a sports enthusiast. Because I have a good memory for dates, I frequently use them as anchors for information. I don’t spend as much time researching as I ought to. That was the closest I got to winning during the tournament’s national tour in the summer of 2005.
Is it accurate to say you’ve become famous?
I see a famous person when I think about a celebrity. Many people recognize me since I appear on Eggheads frequently, especially now that we show at 6 p.m. I’m okay with people approaching me and starting a conversation now, even though it doesn’t come naturally to me anymore.
