After Biden made Jackson’s formal offer on Thursday night, the next step was to get the ball rolling. Chuck Schumer, the Senate’s majority leader, has vowed a speedy confirmation of President Obama’s candidate for the Supreme Court. To be confirmed to the bench, all that is required is a simple majority vote. Kamala Harris serves as a tie-breaker for the Democrats in the Senate, having 50 seats to her name. The Democratic Party has set a deadline of early April for ultimate confirmation, and hearings before the Judiciary Committee are expected to begin at the end of March at the latest.
