On September 27, 2021, he was ranked first in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings for men, surpassing everyone else.

It is widely accepted that Usman is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. In his professional career, Usman has a record of 20-1, with his lone defeat coming by submission in his second fight. Usman was a member of the 2010 U.S. University World Team, where he participated in the 84-kilogram division. The 2010 NCAA Division II National Champion, three-time NCAA DII All-American, and NAIA National qualifier all competed in the 174-pound division.

Background

In Auchi, Nigeria, Usman was born. Father was a major in the Nigerian Army and mother was a teacher. Kashetu is a doctor of pharmacy and Mohammed is a mixed martial artist, both of whom are related to him. Usman had a difficult upbringing in Benin City, where he lived with his mother and two brothers. When Usman was eight years old, his father, Muhammed Nasiru Usman, immigrated to the United States and settled in Dallas, Texas.

A Career in Professional Wrestling

He began wrestling in high school during his sophomore year at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. During Usman’s amateur wrestling career, his coach had a hard time pronouncing his first name Kamarudeen, hence he was referred to as “Marty” by his teammates. In high school, Usman amassed a 53–3 record and finished third in the Texas state wrestling championships. He then competed at the senior national tournament alongside Jon Jones before deciding to attend college.

2020: UFC 251 on July 12, 2020, was supposed to be Usman’s second title defense against longtime colleague and two-time No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu World Champion Gilbert Burns. Usman chose to train with Trevor Wittman before the fight because they were both originally from the Sanford MMA camp. When Burns tested positive for COVID-19 on July 3, 2020, he was immediately removed from the card. Reports surfaced on July 5, 2020, that Jorge Masvidal had stepped up and replaced Burns on short notice. Usman won the fight by unanimous decision after keeping Masvidal in the clinch for the majority of the bout.

2021: Gilbert Burns, the BJJ World Champion, was slated to face Usman once again on December 12th, 2020 at UFC 256. Due to undisclosed injuries, Usman withdrew on October 5th, 2020, and the fight was scheduled to take place on February 13th, 2021, as the headliner for UFC 258. Usman successfully defended his title for the third time, defeating the former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre with a third-round technical knockout to set a new record for the longest winning streak in the division. UFC 261 in Orlando, Florida, on April 24, 2021, will feature Usman vs. Jorge Masvidal for the UFC Welterweight Championship for the fifth time. It was the first time in UFC history that he defended his title by defeating Masvidal in the second round. He received his fourth bonus Performance of the Night award with this victory. On November 6, 2021, Usman fought Colby Covington for the UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 268 in Las Vegas. It was unanimously decided that Usman would keep his title.

Samirah, Usman’s daughter from his previous marriage, is their only child (born 2014). His father, Muhammed Nasiru Usman, was convicted in May 2010 of multiple charges, including health care fraud and money laundering, relating to a health care fraud operation in Tarrant County, Texas. FCI Seagoville released him on March 16, 2021, after serving 15 years in jail and being ordered to pay $1,300,000 in restitution.
