Jay and I used to play with mini-sticks in our small living room. Our mother had inherited some expensive Royal Doulton china, which she kept in a hutch. We’d use a coffee table and two pillows to make a net. We’d basically play NHL. For some reason, he was always the goalie and I the forward. We’d draught teams for hours. We’d always have six teams and draught NHL players.
Many of the players we coach now were drafted as kids. I’ll always tell him, that Charlie Huddy was obviously one of the best Oilers ever, and he was a guy who would get drafted on our teams. This was in the early and mid-80s we’d do this. The moral of the story is our mom would get pretty mad at us because we’d rack up the Royal Doulton China and try to piece it back together and not get in trouble. One of my earliest memories of hockey was us doing that together.
