To commemorate Battle of Britain’s 80th anniversary
The Rivals, penned by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Oliver Chris, is the basis for the new play. Bean and Chris, who substitute aristocratic country gentlemen with RAF officers, bring the charm of Sheridan’s 18th-century comedy of manners to the 1940s Battle of Britain. To commemorate the Battle of Britain’s 80th anniversary, the National Theatre will broadcast Jack Absolute Flies Again. The love life of fighter pilot Jack Absolute is the focus of this play. He must vie for Lydia Languish’s affections at the base while fighting the Luftwaffe in the air.
This fly is entirely Jack’s. In this sequel, Laurie Davidson and Natalie Simpson return as the protagonist and antagonists, respectively. Caroline Quentin, widely known for her performance in the 1990s sitcom Men Behaving Badly, plays Mrs. Malaprop. Quentin’s recent performance at the RSC in Sir John Vanbrugh’s 1697 play The Provoked Wife demonstrates his ability to bring the brilliant lexicon of Restoration comedy to life. Thea Sharrock, who won four Olivier Awards for her previous National Theatre musical, After the Dance, is the director for this production.
