Is The 39 Steps A True Story: The 39 Steps is a British thriller film from 1935 that helped establish Alfred Hitchcock as one of the genre’s top directors and featured themes that would become trademarks of his films? Pamela overhears a conversation as she is about to depart that convinces her that Hannay’s astounding claims are true and persuade her to stay with him. Hannay finally deduces the secret of “the 39 steps” at the Palladium in London, where the action climaxes. History of production

The first production of the play, written by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon for a cast of four actors and funded by a £1,000 Yorkshire Arts Grant, debuted in 1995 in front of an audience of 90 people at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire, before touring village halls across the north of England. It premiered on Broadway in a Roundabout Theatre production at the American Airlines Theatre, billed as Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, with previews commencing on January 4 and the official opening on January 15, 2008. The original run ended on March 29, 2008, and the production was transferred to the Cort Theatre on April 29, 2008, and then to the Helen Hayes Theatre on January 21, 2009. Edwards transferred to these shows as Richard Hannay, the only actor from the UK cast to do so.

Aitken also directed the US plays, with McKintosh designing them. Jennifer Ferrin, Arnie Burton, and Cliff Saunders also appeared in the first US productions. On July 6, 2008, Edwards’ stint ended, and Sam Robards took over as Richard Hannay. This frequently necessitates lightning-fast character swaps, as well as the ability to play many characters at once.

Production notes and film references

The plot and characters of the play are similar to those of the film. In comparison to the original and more serious film, the play is a more humorous portrayal of the narrative, in the style of Monty Python and Barlow’s own National Theatre of Brent. Other Hitchcock films are referenced and music excerpts are used in the play. The four-person cast plays between 100 and 150 roles, with some actors playing multiple characters in the same scene. Charles Ludlam’s The Mystery of Irma Vep comes to mind with the fast, humorous transitions. The actress who plays Annabella Schmidt also plays Pamela and Margaret, two additional amorous heroines, and the two clowns perform practically all of the other roles.
