Joni, whose real name is Roberta Joan Anderson, considered nature to be a religion unto itself throughout her formative years in Canada. Despite the peace and quiet of the countryside, Joni’s youth was filled with hardships due to her ongoing medical issues. A crippled Joni woke up one morning in late 1953 at the age of 10 years and 10 months. Once the sickness was discovered, she was taken to a quarantined polio colony in Saskatoon, which was designed to stop the spread of the disease.

Her Morgellons condition, Joni explained: ‘My skin is covered in fibers that look like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically recognized as animal, vegetable or mineral’. She couldn’t leave her house for several years because she couldn’t wear clothes because she felt like she was being “eaten alive.” She had to crawl across the floor at times because her legs were so cramped that she couldn’t walk. In spite of the fact that Morgellons is commonly described as a “mystery” disease.
Medical experts believe that victims have Mental Disorder
Many of the victims had a history of drug use, which may explain why they were targeted. Given her counter-culture background, Joni was expected to admit to abusing a variety of substances, including copious amounts of cocaine. “If you get into the iron lung, chances are you won’t get out,” she added of her solitary confinement. Moreover, there was a chance that I might never walk again. As a result, a large portion of my back’s muscles had been severed and I was unable to move. Therefore my back was bent and arched up like the back of an old doll.
Bill Anderson, Joni’s father, never came to see her. Because of the long-distance and the fear of getting the disease, Myrtle’s mother, Myrtle, only came to visit once. In spite of this, she felt it was a “little comfort to a 10-year-old child already struggling with loneliness. When she refused to accept that she would be confined to a wheelchair, she prayed, saying: ‘I didn’t know who I was praying to. (Valium) ’. It wasn’t Jesus or God who did it. ‘I had a feeling that there was some sort of a divine force at work,’ he said. I promised to make it up to her if she returned my legs. So I battled it like crazy and stunned them by getting up and strolling around.
With Simon and his bowling buddies, Joni became one of the boys by the time she was 15. She went out dancing with Simon and his friends and drank beer with them on the banks of the river while singing nasty songs. It’s a condition described by the Mayo Clinic as “uncommon, unexplained skin disorder characterised by sores, crawling sensations on and under the skin, and fiber-like filaments emerging from the sores.” The Centers for Disease Control notes that “the signs and symptoms of Morgellons… are very similar to those of a mental illness.”

In February, Mitchell attended Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles. From her traumatic beginnings in Alberta, Canada, to her climb to music prominence in the ’60s and ’70s will be the subject of Reckless Daughter, which tells the story of Mitchell’s amazing life.
As recently as last month, Mitchell’s sickness reaffirmed her status as the most renowned flag-bearer of Morgellons, despite the CDC’s devastating study. According to a 2010 interview with the L.A. Times, “I’m truly wanting to get out the music business to battle for Morgellons sufferers.” That fight is going on—and with no help from Leitao—the mother who ignited a worldwide medical debate before disappearing from the face of the earth.
