David Robert Daley was born on May 21, 1994, at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital to Debbie (née Selvester) and Robert Daley. A three-year-old brother and a five-year-old brother are also in the family. The day after Daley’s 17th birthday, Robert, their father, died of a brain tumor at the age of 40. Canadian Alexandre Despatie and British Leon Taylor were two of his early diving idols, and Taylor later served as a mentor to him.
While taking part in regular diving sessions, a coach took notice of Daley, and in September of that year, he was inducted into the competitive diving team. The 8/9-year-old boy’s division of the National Novice Championships was his debut tournament, which took place in April 2003. It wasn’t until he competed at a Southampton invitational tournament in September 2003 that the rest of the world learned about his achievements in the 1 m, 3 m, and platform events. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, Daley won the 1-meter springboard, the 3-meter springboard, and the platform at the British Championships for his age category. During the Australian Elite Junior Nationals in 2005, Daley competed as a guest competitor and took the first position in the 14–15 age group event on the platform and second place in the 3 m springboard. In the 14–15 age group, he finished second in the platform and third in 3 m springboards at the 2005 Aachen Junior International. Although he qualified for the 2006 Commonwealth Games due to his age, he was left out of the England team. Daley was a student at Eggbuckland Community College in Plymouth, Devon, from the ages of eleven to fourteen. To raise awareness about child abuse, he became an NSPCC celebrity ambassador at age 13 when it was revealed that he had been bullied for 18 months prior to being a spokesperson for Childline, the NSPCC’s children’s hotline. According to the leading Plymouth daily The Herald, Daley has been bullied at school since the Olympics, and his father has admitted to the BBC that he temporarily removed him from his previous school due to the ineffectiveness of its approach to the bullying problem. It was said that the media praised Daley for coming up about his issue.

On August 23, 2010, Daley started a YouTube channel. His content includes vlogs, workouts, and cuisine videos. Daley has more than 1,200,000 members and moreover 130 million views as of September 2021. When Daley posted a video to YouTube on December 2nd, 2013, he revealed that he had been dating a man since January of that year. “I’ve never felt better,” he remarked, adding, “I’m looking forward to what the future holds,” Daley admitted that disclosing details of his personal life had been a difficult decision. To describe his feelings of love: “I’d never had the sensation before, it occurred so suddenly; my heart was pounding, and I couldn’t stop thinking about him,” he stated. By turning down Brighton College’s offer of a full scholarship because of its distance from his home, Daley’s father initiated negotiations with Plymouth College, which had given him a “quite big scholarship.” The next week, it was revealed that Daley had indeed registered at Plymouth. After meeting at an industry event, Daley remarked that it was “a real love-at-first-sight moment” for him and Black.
On October 1, 2015, he announced their engagement. On May 6, 2017, Daley and Black tied the knot at Bovey Castle in Devon. Daley and Black made their surrogacy pregnancy official with an Instagram announcement on February 14th. The controversial nature of surrogacy led to some disapproval. In June, they welcomed their first child into the world. The family is based in the capital city of the United Kingdom. They don’t post images of their son online or on his social media profiles because Daley and Black don’t want anyone to see his face.

As a patron of the LGBT+ charity Switchboard in 2015, Daley worked with Calum McSwiggan to relaunch the organization under its new name. Daley made his debut as host of the Virgin Holidays Attitude Awards in October of that year. When Scotland had its independence referendum in September 2014, Daley was one of more than 200 public personalities who signed a letter to The Guardian opposing it. Ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Daley called on Commonwealth nations to remove their anti-gay legislation.
A prize or a citation: One of the “100 Makers of the 21st Century” named by The Sunday Times. The University of St Mark and St John in Plymouth, Devon, presented him with an Honorary Doctorate on September 27, 2017. On September 13, 2021, Plymouth City Council gave him the Freedom of the City of Plymouth, Devon. Matty Lee’s synchronized 10m platform gold medal with Daley was ranked third by FINA as the most memorable Olympic moment of the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
