As a way to commemorate a year of living in his garden as a schoolboy, he has invited students from all over the world to join him. On March 28, 2013, Max Woosey set out on a journey to raise money for a Hospice that cared for a family friend, Rick Abbott, who passed away.

When Mr. Abbott was dying, he gave Max his old tent, telling him, “Promise me you’ll have your own experiences in it.” Mr. Abbott was an avid adventurer, camper, and outdoor sports lover. It has since generated over £280,000 for the North Devon Hospice and his tale has spread around the world, thanks to the 11-year-old from Braunton, Devon. He’s been out in all kinds of bad weather, including the coldest spell the UK has seen in a decade. Max slept in his tent for his birthday, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. This time, I mean business. Even if it’s raining or snowing, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is.

Mr. Woosey

In order to earn money for a hospice that cared for a family friend (Woosey family/PA), Max Woosey, 11, has spent a year camping in his backyard “Max’s Big Camp Out” is now open to children from all over the world who want to spend the night in their backyard on Saturday night. If they are unable to go camping, Max encourages them to make a den out of cushions and blankets at home and sleep there. The fact that Max began out with the goal of raising just a few dollars for our local hospice is extraordinary in and of itself. “This is something I’ve been doing every night for a year now,” Max explained. Because, “I know that if I don’t, I’m going to look back and say, ‘Oh no! You blew it!’”

Max’s personal heroes and his Autobiography

“It’s incredible. Max claimed that children in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia will be able to participate. Organizers said, “It will be a lot of fun, and they can use it to raise money for any charity they choose. (jillszeder.com) Bear Grylls and Jonny Wilkinson, two of Max’s personal heroes, have just sent him video messages of support. Max exclaimed, “I couldn’t believe it!” when he realized what had happened. “When I’m not reading the Beano, I read books about Jonny Wilkinson and his autobiography that I have in my tent.

‘Carry on kid, you can do it,’ they both said, and that was fantastic.’” When Rachael Woosey, the mother of Max Woosey, saw how enormous this had gotten, she had to stop and pinch herself. It’s remarkable that Max started out with the goal of generating just a few hundred dollars for our local hospice he’s already raised over £175,000 and counting.” To mark a year in his tent, he chose to raise awareness of children’s mental health during the lockdown.

As someone who has been in lockdown, he understands what it’s like to be cut off from the rest of the world and unable to participate in team sports, so he’s doing this for all the other kids who have had to deal with the Covid situation.” It’s open to kids from all over the world. Mark Woosey, a Royal Marine, had no idea that a few nights sleeping in a tent would turn into a year-long experience for his son, Max Woosey.

“I assumed he meant a few days, not weeks.” He started camping every night for weeks on end, and I couldn’t believe it,” Mr. Woosey recalled. The adventure Max has been on has been incredible,” says the author. Both his empathy for others as well as his steely resolve has been exposed by this experience. Max’s Big Camp Out provides children an opportunity to accomplish something positive after months of hearing “you can’t do this” and “you can’t do that.” This is why it’s so fantastic.

After that, Mrs. Woosey said, “It’s absolutely up to them who they raise donations for and it should be every child’s option. ” You can join Max in raising money for our local hospice if you want to. What matters is that they can choose a children’s mental health charity to go with Night or a charity that’s important to their hearts. It is up to them.” On the night of Max’s one-year anniversary, “they can all make a difference by camping with Max.” He’s been camping out in his lawn every night since lockdown began to raise money for the North Devon Hospice, which cared for a friend of the Woosey family, Rick.

Max had originally intended to stay in the tent for 100 days, but he has persevered and today marks the 150th day he has spent sleeping in the tent Rick left for him after his death in February, with the promise that he would use it for an expedition. Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote to Max in a private letter: “I was deeply saddened to read of Rick’s loss and deeply moved by your eulogy for him. “You have raised thousands of pounds for the hospice where he was treated for by camping out in the tent he left you for 150 consecutive nights. Congratulations on being named the UK’s 1460th Point of Light! You are truly an inspiration!”

According to Max:

It means a lot to me that you’ve given me this wonderful honor. Having raised so much money for the hospice that cared for my buddy Rick in his final days has been a wonderful experience. “I’m sure he’d be proud of me.” When I’m not reading the Beano, I have a few volumes about Jonny Wilkinson and his autobiography in my tent. They both encouraged me, saying, ‘Keep going, child! You can do it!’” He’s spent every night in a tent in the backyard of his family’s house – even during the holidays (Christmas, his birthday, and even though the winter storms)

It provides specialized care for patients at home and at the hospice, as well as support for the entire family, to around 3,000 people each year. The coronavirus epidemic has had a devastating effect on the organization’s funding, so Max’s donation is essential. On March 27th, 2021, children all around the world are invited to Max’s Big Camp Out, which will commemorate one year of Max’s great quest.

If you have a backyard or a home-built den, cushions or blankets can be used to create a cozy place for youngsters to play and generate money for a charity of their choice. Rachael, Max’s mother, says individuals from all over the world have contacted her about the campout, including from the United States and Singapore. Even Bear Grylls has given his support to the 10-year-old ahead of the competition this weekend.
