Elections 2018: Luria ran for office in Virginia’s 2nd congressional district in the House of Representatives. In the Democratic primary on June 10, Karen Mallard won 38% of the vote, but she ended up with 62%. In the general election, incumbent Republican Scott Luria was beaten by Luria with 51% of the vote to Taylor’s 49%. She won six of the district’s nine county-level authorities, including all but one of the district’s five autonomous cities. She also carried Taylor’s hometown of Virginia Beach.

2020:

In order to continue serving as mayor of New York, Luria ran for reelection. In a rematch, Taylor lost by a 51 percent margin. Luria won six of the district’s nine county-level jurisdictions, including all but one autonomous city, in the 2018 election. She likely benefited from Joe Biden’s victory in Virginia Beach, which made him the first Democrat to win there since 1964.

2022:

Luria intends to run for reelection in 2022. She has focused her campaign on defense policy while running for governor in a highly competitive district, avoiding discussion of Vice President Joe Biden’s $1.5 trillion Build Back Better plan, which she voted for.

Impeachment:

Luria called herself a “security Democrat” (a term for new Democrats with experience in national security) and argued for an investigation into Trump’s impeachment in a Washington Post op-ed published in September 2019. According to Luria, a town hall meeting attendee from Virginia Beach, President Donald Trump used the assistance of a foreign leader to influence and discredit a future political adversary in order to affect the outcome of our next election under the guise of combating corruption. Luria, along with all but three Democrats in the House, formally voted in favor of an inquiry into Trump’s possible impeachment at the end of October 2019.

Environment:

Luria agrees with the growing quantity of scientific data demonstrating that global warming is caused by humans. She is particularly worried about how climate change will physically affect both military readiness and global instability. As the Trump administration allegedly tried to undermine military and scientific experts on the physical ramifications of climate change, she also sees this as a smear on the country’s security and scientific institutions.
