David Grohl formed his first band when he was ten years old. He skipped out of high school to join the hardcore band Scream before auditioning for Nirvana. Nirvana would go on to become an international phenomenon. After Kurt Cobain, the band’s late vocalist died, Grohl formed the Foo Fighters.
Dave Grohl, the drummer for Nirvana and later the frontman for the Foo Fighters, is one of rock’s most well-known figures. He moved from Ohio to Virginia when he was three years old. He lived with his mother and older sister Lisa after his parents divorced when he was six years old. After joining Nirvana, Grohl moved in with Kurt Cobain. Nirvana quickly drew the attention of major record labels, who offered lucrative contracts and up-front bonuses. Geffen Records eventually signed them. Because of the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” their debut album with them, Nevermind, was a huge success.
In the early months of 2020, Grohl announced that he will be filming a documentary on band van tours. “What Drives Us,” Grohl’s next book, explores the reasons musicians opt to leave their homes and families behind and spend months on the road in a tiny van.
The Beginning of Life
avid Eric Grohl was born on January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio. His older sister’s name is Lisa. His family moved to Springfield, Virginia when he was a tiny child. His parents, Virginia and James, divorced when he was seven years old. Dave’s mother reared him and his sister. Dave began playing the guitar when he was 12 years old. Because traditional lessons bore him, he stopped taking them and taught himself how to play.
When Dave and Lisa were thirteen years old, they spent a summer in Chicago with their cousin Tracy. Tracy introduced Dave and Lisa to punk rock that summer. In 1982, he performed his first gig with Naked Raygun at Chicago’s Cubby Bear pub. He was 13 years old at the time. He was the vice president of his freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School. His mother enrolled him at Bishop Ireton High School after discovering he was using marijuana. He was a part of several local bands throughout high school. He also taught himself to play the drums.
Grohl joined Dain Bramage, a hardcore punk band when he was 16 years old in December 1985. Grohl quit the band in March 1987 to join Scream, a local band that split the following month. On the road, Scream was already a well-known punk band. Dave was barely a decade younger than the rest of the band. While Kurt was the primary songwriter on this song, it was co-written by all three members of the band. Dave Grohl is a $320 million dollar rock musician, composer, and director from the United States. Some of his most well-known credits include frontman and guitarist for the Foo Fighters, as well as former drummer for Nirvana.
Career
Grohl auditioned for the Washington, D.C. punk rock band Scream when he was 17 years old. He lied about his age for the audition, and he was startled when he received the job. He dropped out of high school during his junior year. He toured with the band and recorded two studio albums and a few live CDs. He met Buzz Osborne of the Melvins while playing drums with Scream. Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic joined Osbourn at Scream one night. Nirvana, the band Cobain and Novoselic had created with drummer Krist Novoselic, was seeking a successor within a few months.
Osbourne informed Grohl that Nirvana was looking for a drummer and gave him Cobain and Novoselic’s phone numbers. The band flew him to Seattle for a one-on-one tryout. The remainder of the story is well-known. The band recorded “Nevermind” in Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios in the spring of 1991, according to Grohl’s 2013 documentary Sound City. “Nevermind” surpassed all expectations when it was released in 1991, becoming a worldwide commercial success. Dave Grohl spent six days in the studio a year after Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died, creating solo work as a means of coping with the grief.
He performed and recorded every instrument on the recordings by himself. When he was finished, he delivered a hundred cassette cassettes to his friends. He chose to go by the Foo Fighters alias rather than his real name. Because he thought the songs were written by a complete band, a Capitol Records executive viewed one of those tapes and promptly signed Dave on the spot. A band called the Foo Fighters was formed as a result of this technique. Dave Grohl, the frontman for the Foo Fighters, has nine albums to his credit. The band has won multiple Grammy Awards and has sold millions of CDs throughout the world.
Grohl has also performed with Queens of the Stone Age and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as a guest musician. Dave Grohl has worked on various other projects, including collaborations with musicians such as Tenacious D and Nine Inch Nails (as well as David Bowie and Paul McCartney). Dave is recognized as one of the friendliest and most down-to-earth figures in the entertainment industry, despite being one of the most famous performers of all time.

Grohl does not need to be able to read music in order to perform.
On May 20, 2015, Grohl and the Foo Fighters performed “Everlong” on Letterman’s final Late Broadcast with David Letterman show. Letterman stated, “Everlong” was his favorite song and that he and the band had been “attached at the hip” since the band postponed tour dates at his request to play his first gig after heart bypass surgery. Grohl and his family live in a humble home in Encino, California. He is well-known for his outspokenness and is a San Fernando Valley fan.
Grohl produced and directed Sound City: The Story of Van Nuys’ Legendary Recording Studio (his directorial debut) in 2013. Grohl directed the HBO miniseries Sonic Highways on the band’s history earlier this year. It was included on the band’s eighth studio album. “A love letter to the tradition of American music,” Grohl said of the record. Each episode delves into the musical history of a different American city through a series of discussions with Grohl.
