Finty used to drink to alleviate her feelings of inadequacy, even after establishing herself as an actress in her own right, with roles in films such as The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, Mrs. Brown, and Gosford Park. ‘It simply all went horribly wrong after my father died [in 2001],’ recalls Finty, who was barred off the road for five years after her second drink-driving conviction. ‘Two weeks after my father died, my mother bravely put me in rehab.’

She was so taken with it that she decided to adopt it as her stage name.
