Dame Judi Dench Daughter: Dame Judi Dench’s daughter, Sebastian Shakespeare, recalls severe fears that drove her to drink. Her mother is the best actress of her generation, and she is a talented performer herself. Finty Williams, the only daughter of Dame Judi Dench and the late Michael Williams, has revealed how she struggled with self-loathing and body image issues as a young drama student.
This, she says, was the catalyst for her descent into alcoholism, which nearly killed her. I had an inverted light bulb moment when I was 18 and realized that nothing I could do, say, or how I looked would ever be good enough,’ Finty, now 46, recalls, noting that she felt physically and intellectually inadequate in comparison to her theatre school peers. Finty, who was a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was following in her mother’s footsteps, adds, ‘I was surrounded by really beautiful people – they still are very beautiful people.’ ‘ “If they’re really intoxicated, they won’t notice that I’m really, really dull and short and round and don’t look like a dancer and all of those things,” I reasoned at the time.
Williams confesses in a podcast about the causes of addiction hosted by Dr. Christian Jessen. Finty used to drink to alleviate her feelings of inadequacy, even after establishing herself as an actress in her own right, with roles in films such as The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, Mrs. Brown, and Gosford Park. ‘It simply all went horribly wrong after my father died [in 2001],’ recalls Finty, who was barred off the road for five years after her second drink-driving conviction. ‘Two weeks after my father died, my mother bravely put me in rehab.’

Her present first name was not her birth name: Finty may appear to be a made-up name, but it’s not uncommon for people in the performing arts to have a stage name. Given that she was born Tara Cressida Frances Williams in 1972, it’s easy to see why she chose to change her name. Finty was derived from a nickname, which is one of the more intriguing aspects. She was so taken with it that she decided to adopt it as her stage name.
Dame Judi Dench Daughter
Despite her classical training, she began working before graduating: There are several famous performers from the United Kingdom who have had classical training. As a result, it should come as no surprise that she secured her first job a year before she even graduated. She has also been working steadily since then.
- She is descended from true royalty.
Even if you’ve never heard of her, there’s a good chance you’ve watched something with her mother, Dame Judi Dench. It’s simple to see where Ms. Williams’ skill comes from when you consider her mother’s acting abilities.
- She and her mother have a very close relationship.
The special relationship between mother and daughter is one of the nicest things in life, at least for most people. Dench and Williams have spoken about their unusual bond in the past. The elder mother even went so far as to remark that her daughter could tell her anything because their relationship has always been one of trust and openness.
- This isn’t to say that there aren’t surprises every now and then.
Although the two are close, Finty has taken the decision on at least one occasion to be less than forthcoming about something. That’s quite natural; we all do it. However, the event she chose to remain silent about was undoubtedly one of life’s most significant turning points, one that had an impact on both her and her mother.
You might have seen both women in the same movie
If you’re a big fan of Dame Judi Dench, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Finty, her daughter. It’s not uncommon to see the two of them in the same movie, often right next to each other. They’ve been together in a number of films, including “We Can Be Heroes.”
- She is devoted to her family.
You’ll probably notice that she only mentions two things on her social media profiles: her career and her family. In fact, she frequently expresses her affection for her family openly. Fortunately, her decision to keep her pregnancy a secret from her mother did not harm their relationship.
She also adores kittens.
This is something that comes from her social media posts once again. Some individuals prefer cats, while others prefer dogs, and still, others prefer both. It’s all about the cats in her case, and she’s not ashamed to admit it, nor should she be. She not only adores cats in general, but she also has a number of them. Perhaps she can’t bear the thought of abandoning a helpless animal.
- She battled drinking for a while.
She isn’t the first person to struggle with an alcohol problem, and she will not be the last. Alcohol is, unfortunately, frequently utilized as a coping method for a variety of other concerns. Usually, the person in question is unaware that they have a problem until it has gotten out of hand. One of her pals is credited with assisting her in retracing her steps.
- Her father passed very recently.
Michael Williams, her father, recently passed away. Finty was 46 years old at the time, yet she has battled with his absence understandably. In reality who wouldn’t struggle with losing a parent? It doesn’t seem to matter how old you are or how mature you are supposed to be at the time of their passing, you end up feeling just like a terrified five-year-old who’s lost and can’t find your way back. It’s a horrifying and agonizing experience.
