“Something was wrong with my kid, and no one could tell me what it was,” Wilson says to People. Chandra Wilson, who plays Miranda Bailey on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, has a lot of experience solving medical puzzles. However, after her daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease, the actress went into full investigative mode. After a casual outing with friends when she was 16, Sarina McFarlane thought she had food poisoning. After a sequence of vomiting and sickness, both mother and daughter realized something was wrong.
Wilson, 47, says she had spells of vomiting and painful abdominal aches in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is strange,'” he remembers. “I found myself keeping track of what she was putting in her mouth, where we were, and how long we had been there,” she explains. I kept a binder at home with the information from each hospital visit. I was carrying a large binder everywhere I went around the seventh month. McFarlane was diagnosed with mitochondrial dysfunction, severe depletion of the body’s energy supply, and CVS, a rare ailment that causes vomiting, nausea, and acute tiredness at inopportune times and necessitates numerous hospitalizations, only in 2010.
McFarlane, now 23, admits that she was “scared, disillusioned, and sad” in the months leading up to her diagnosis. People believed she was vomiting in high school because she was trying to lose weight, she recalls. Dr. Richard Boles, medical director for Courtagen Life Sciences, says the episodes are usually short and come in waves. Because the symptoms are so similar, it’s quite difficult to diagnose. “There are truly no objective standards to justify it,” he claims. Experts have yet to discover a solution for the disease, but according to Boles, it can be treated with the right medication and a healthy diet and lifestyle.
McFarlane’s difficulties seemed to worsen when she transitioned from adolescent to adult care (where she had the same team of doctors and nurses). “If you go to the hospital two, three, or four times, they think you’re a drug addict,” she explains. “You have to go through the process of being re-believed,” Wilson says. McFarlane, a screenplay student at Cal State Northridge, and her mother are now doing their best to be positive. “I could be upset about it, but it’ll come back regardless,” McFarlane maintains.
