According to Ornato’s account, Trump grew upset and attempted to take hold of the steering wheel before lunging at Engel’s clavicles, Hutchinson said. The president’s driver, Ornato, and Engel, all of whom were prepared to testify, allegedly denied informing Hutchinson of the event.

According to Carol Leonnig, the author of a book about the Secret Service due out in 2021, “some people accused them of at times being facilitators and ‘yes men of the president particularly Tony Ornato and very much people who wanted to do what he wanted and see him pleased.” They also “turned to their personal media profiles to cheer on the revolt and the individuals riding up to the Capitol as heroes,” according to the author, who claimed that several members of Trump’s Secret Service team were hoping Biden would lose.
Hutchinson recalled White House counsel Pat Cipollone saying to Meadows at one point in the uprising, “Mark, we need to do more, they’re literally calling for the vice president to be fucking hung,” to which Meadows replied, “You heard it, Pat, he thinks Mike deserves it, he doesn’t think they’re doing anything wrong.”
