Classical Music is Created for anyone to Appreciate

André Rieu sincerely thinks that classical music is created for anyone to appreciate, not just for the elite. Audience members can be seen smiling, crying, singing, and dancing in the aisles throughout his performances. Rieu has sold more than 40 million CDs and DVDs (his recent albums are Happy Days – CD/DVD and Christmas Down Under – Live from Sydney – DVD). He has 30 number-one hits to his credit and 500 platinum records under his belt.

André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu (born 1 October 1949) is a Dutch violinist and conductor best known for developing the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. It is he and his orchestra who have turned classical and waltz music into a touring show that competes with the biggest pop and rock artists in the world today. In Maastricht, where he was born and raised. With over $50 million dollars in wholesale shipments of his CDs and DVDs in Australia, Rieu became Australia’s best-selling musician between 2006 and 2011 and was the highest-selling artist in the country’s music business from 2006 to 2011.

Growing up and Adolescence

Rieu is a French Huguenot surname, although both of Rieu’s parents were devout Catholics who raised him as a Catholic. Rieu considers himself to be an agnostic at the moment. André was born to Andries Antonie Rieu and is the third of six children. He has two older sisters (Teresia and Cilia), two younger brothers (Robert and Jean-Philippe), and a younger sister (Gaby Buirma-Rieu) (Gaby Buirma-Rieu) (Gaby Buirma-Rieu).

It was Rieu’s father who led the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra. Showing early promise, André began learning violin at the age of five. He was intrigued by the symphony from an early age. He studied violin at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège and at the Conservatorium Maastricht, (1968–1973), studying under Jo Juda and Herman Krebbers. From 1974 to 1977, he attended the Music Academy in Brussels, studying with André Gertler. The Royal Conservatory of Brussels awarded him the title of “Premier Prix” for his training.

He married Marjorie Kochmann in 1975

She’s taught English as a second language and writes poetry in her spare time. Their two sons are named Marc and Pierre. He speaks six languages: Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. While criticizing Rieu’s performance, Chris Boyd of the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne described Rieu’s primary stage role as “blarney and delegation”. Eamon Kelly stated in The Australian newspaper: “It is disappointing to see professional journalists participate in cheap, misleading stereotypes to reduce criticism of Rieu.”

In addition, he wrote: “Rieu’s adversaries are just as incorrect in their condemnation of his work. Millions of people have been delighted by Rieu’s live and recorded performances. Few of his listeners are regular classical music goers and it may be viewed as promising that, via Rieu, they are listening to standards in the classical repertoire. The fact that Rieu is more interested in making music that people can enjoy than in making art is not a reflection of his artistic abilities.
