Trebek attended the University of Ottawa to study philosophy after finishing high school in 1957. Although he became known for his calm demeanor on camera, in 1966 he decided to leave journalism for the more financially rewarding role of game show host. He then hosted the Canadian academic competition show Reach for the Top, which featured teams of high school students competing against one another.
Trebek moved up the ranks to host the more popular, nationally broadcast game show Jackpot in Canada in 1970.
In 1974, he tied the knot with Elaine Callei. In 1981, they finally called it quits and divorced. In 1990, he wed Jean Currivan for the second time. They’ve started a family and now there are two kids. He has traveled to many developing nations with the nonprofit World Vision to help bring about their programs.
While at home on December 11th, 2007, Trebek experienced a minor heart attack. He made a full recovery and resumed his regular duties in January. On July 27, 2011, he was chasing a thief from his San Francisco hotel room when he tore an Achilles tendon. On June 23, 2012, he had a minor heart attack, but by July, he was back at work.
Trebek revealed his diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer on March 6, 2019.
