In its eight Super Bowl appearances, the team is tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos for the second-highest number of Super Bowl appearances in history, trailing only the New England Patriots’ record eleven appearances. This has also coincided with eight NFC championships, the most in the league’s history.

The Cowboys have won five of their seven Super Bowl appearances, tying them with their NFC rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, for third place behind Pittsburgh’s and New England’s respective records of six championships and five appearances, respectively. There had not been an NFL franchise based south of Washington, D.C. since the Dallas Texans went out of business in 1952, making the founding of the Dallas Cowboys a watershed moment in sports history. AFL owner Lamar Hunt and oilman Clint Murchison Jr. had tried unsuccessfully to bring an NFL expansion team to Dallas (both of whom were eventually awarded AFL teams), but George Preston Marshall, owner of the Washington Redskins, controlled the market in the South.

In 1958, Murchison attempted to purchase the Washington Redskins from Marshall but was unsuccessful. An agreement was reached, but just as the contract was about to be signed, Marshall intervened and demanded that the parameters be changed.

Murchison was enraged by this and decided to back out of the arrangement. Marshall was then adamant in his opposition to Murchison getting a franchise in Dallas. Because NFL expansion required unanimous consent from club owners at the time, Marshall’s position would bar Murchison from being a member of the organization.
