These cult classics are not to be overlooked. In recent months, one of the most frequently asked questions I’ve received, once the specifics of my day job have been revealed, has been: “What’s a good alternative fragrance to Portrait of a Lady?” To be clear, there is nothing wrong with the scent of one of Frédéric Malle’s most popular offerings (from £120; fredericmalle.co.uk). In fact, it is one of his most popular offerings. a heady concoction that’s sumptuous and grown-up – as well as very elegantly sexy. My favorite scent, with its distinctive blend of rose, patchouli, and sandalwood, is one that I wear frequently and consider to be one of my all-time favorites.

The problem is that there are so many other people who feel the same way. Given the popularity of artisanal scents in recent years, Portrait has emerged as a go-to perfume setting for women who want their fragrance to stand out from the crowd and command attention. When it comes to fine fragrance, it immediately conveys a sense of authority and a certain amount of knowledge.

Sisley Soir d’Orient (£238, available only at harrods.com) is a perfume by Sisley. Rose, patchouli, and sandalwood are blended together with geranium and incense to create a decadent scent that is as heady as the original, Portrait. It’s absolutely delicious. And, if you don’t want to spend the extra money on the limited-edition packaging, you can get it for £92.50 from Sisley-paris.co.uk instead. As a result, if you enjoy wearing it, the chances are that you are all too aware of how many others do as well. Consequently, in order to shake things up a bit, because I would never recommend quitting entirely, here are my top contenders…

Jo Malone London Rose & Magnolia Cologne

Jo Malone London Rose & Magnolia Cologne is a floral cologne with a floral scent. The price is £104 and can be found at jomalone.co.uk. This new release is a very charismatic and alluring rose, but the addition of magnolia lends a touch of lightness to the composition. Nonetheless, it contains notes of patchouli and amber, which help to keep it warm and sensual. It’s a complete pleasure to put on.

Le Labo Baie 19 (from £57; cultbeauty.co.uk): a hydrating cream with a hint of citrus. Despite the fact that it is based on sultry patchouli, it is blended with fresh green leaves and dried juniper berries to create a crispness that isn’t quite as overwhelming as Portrait of a Lady. Miller Harris Craft & Glamour (£95; millerharris.com) is a high-end craft and glamour brand. This is a fragrance created specifically for the Royal Opera House, and it is seriously stylish. Another patchouli and sandalwood-based creation, this one is very seductive, but hints of tonka bean (which smells somewhat vanilla-esque) give it a pirouette of airiness, ensuring that it never feels too heavy on the skin.

Zara’s Emotions are a collection of her feelings. Zara’s Fleur de Patchouli (£25.99, zara.com) is a calming scent. Zara, you are correct! It is not necessary to spend an arm and a leg to travel the fragrant Portrait route. This item is part of a new luxury line launched last month by Jo Loves founder Jo Malone MBE, which includes other items like this. Her struggle with patchouli has been that it tends to take over, but she has found that by blending it with bergamot essence and peony, she has been able to keep it under control. It’s still a daring scent, but there’s almost a breath of innocence in the air when you smell it as well.

My favourite spritzes to give as gifts are as follows:

Dior Joy Eau de Parfum Intense (£83; dior.com) is a fruity, floral fragrance. It’s a delicate blend of rose, jasmine, and a touch of woody notes, making it feminine without being overly girly. Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal (£60, boots.com) is a cult classic. It is the combination of the notes of pear, honey, and jasmine that creates something saucier than their sweetness would suggest.

Givenchy L’Interdit (£51; debenhams.com) is a classic. A fresh take on a classic that has already been updated (the original was created for Audrey Hepburn). However, despite the fact that orange blossom, tuberose, and patchouli are prominent notes, this is an excellent all-rounder. With a delicate punch, this fragrance is fresh and floral.
