Gabby Logan Dad: “It brought back a lot of memories” for Gabby Logan, whose brother Daniel died at the age of 15 after having a cardiac attack while playing football. “Watching Christian Eriksen’s fall brought back a lot of memories,” Gabby Logan said.

In May 1992, the broadcaster’s younger brother was sadly killed suddenly while playing football in their back yard with their father, former Leeds United and Wales player Terry Yorath. The presenter was just eight years old at the time.

As the globe watched in horror as Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland, shockwaves reverberated throughout the world.

It was a very personal experience for sports broadcaster Gabby Logan, whose brother fell and died in their yard while playing football when he was just 15 – she was there to support him.

Gabby, who is married to former Scottish rugby star Kenny Logan, has previously talked about how the incident occurred in front of her father, the former Wales manager Terry Yorath, in 1992, according to her website.

The next day, after seeing the Danish midfielder fall on the field during Saturday’s game, Gabby took to Instagram to make an emotional appeal for people to remember what a “wonderful game” football can be.

Having seen others remark on social media that “football means nothing” and “this puts things into perspective,” she felt compelled to compose it, she said.

In response to a tweet from a well-known football writer, who said, “This game we adore truly doesn’t matter at all,” the 48-year-old claimed she took her pen and paper and started writing.

“I believe he and all the others who have expressed similar opinions are, with all due respect, misguided,” Gabby said. Let me attempt to explain why the game we like so much is so important.

According to several of you, my brother was playing football in the yard with my father, who was also the Wales football manager at the time, when he fell and died, 29 years ago. He was 15 years old, approaching 16 years old at the time. He seemed to be in good shape, was physically powerful, was attractive, and was in good health, or so we believed.

However, we did not have a defibrillator at home, nor did we have a team of medical professionals to operate on his heart, and he was declared dead an hour later in the hospital. He was born with a congenital cardiac condition that was not discovered until later. Football was his life, his love, and his passion, and he was laid to rest in his favorite uniform of all, the Wales football shirt, a week after his death.

“Of course, I’m certain that Daniel, my brother, would have grasped the situation and that he would one day express gratitude to us for saving his life, and he could even have discovered a new ‘passion’.”

“Sometimes, during the genuinely horrible grief-saturated months that followed his death, I would think, what if we’d known that his heart was a ticking time bomb ready to explode and kill him?” And would he have been satisfied with us if he had had emergency surgery or been given medicine to keep him alive, but the price of doing so was that he would never be able to play football again? He was content to live a life without his passion until he got the opportunity to pursue his aspirations.
