Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania and earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics.
In 1995, he traveled to California to attend Stanford University but instead chose to pursue a business career, co-founding Zip2 with his brother Kimbal. In 1999, Compaq bought the company for $307 million. Musk co-founded X.com, an online bank, in the same year, which merged with Confinity to become PayPal in 2000. In 2002, eBay paid $1.5 billion for the firm.
Musk established SpaceX, an aircraft manufacturing and space transportation services firm, in 2002, and currently serves as its CEO and CTO. He joined electric car maker Tesla Motors, Inc. He was a founding member of SolarCity, a solar energy services firm that was eventually purchased by Tesla and renamed Tesla Energy.
He co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to benign artificial intelligence, in 2015. Musk has been chastised for his unconventional or unscientific positions and high-profile disputes. Musk was sued for slander by a British caver who aided in the Tham Luang cave rescue in 2018, and a California jury found in his favor.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued him in the same year for falsely claiming that he had secured money for a private acquisition of Tesla. He reached an agreement with the SEC, temporarily resigning as chairman and accepting Twitter usage restrictions. Musk has been chastised by scientists for spreading false information about the COVID-19 epidemic and for his other viewpoints on artificial intelligence and public transportation.
