Diamond Ring Cleaner: The sight of your diamond engagement ring sparkling and dancing in the light after it has been newly cleaned and polished is one of the most mesmerizing sights you can experience, and it’s only natural that you want to keep that glitz and glamour. And, while you can always take your diamond ring to a jeweler for expert cleaning, it’s a good idea to learn how to clean your diamond ring on your own as a backup plan. Between professional cleanings, regular at-home cleaning will maintain your ring looking its finest and in the best possible condition.

Oil, dirt, and cosmetic residue are deposited on the stone’s surface as a result of normal wear and tear. Clean rings are a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to skin irritation, discoloration of the metals, and scratching of the stones. Knowing how to clean your engagement ring at home is essential to keeping it at its best and clear of germs for as long as possible.

It should be mentioned that home cleanings do not serve as a substitute for professional cleaning services. You can easily remove surface buildup and restore shine yourself, but professional cleanings will safely remove the hard layers of deep, compressed filth and debris that have formed on your jewelry’s surface.

In this case, regular dishwashing soap works best as a jewelry cleaning and disinfectant. The rest of the things you’ll need may almost all be found in your own home: a bowl, warm water, a soft-bristle toothbrush, and a soft cotton cloth.

Please avoid using harsh household cleaners and disinfectants on your diamond, as they can actually cause more harm than good to the stone. We spoke with Mark Mann, the head of Global Jewelry Manufacturing Arts at the Gemological Institute of America, to find out just how to keep your ring’s luster at its peak with simple at-home cleaning.

If you want to maintain your ring looking its best, clean it once a week at the very least. Simply maintaining this level of cleanliness will suffice to keep everyday oil and buildup at bay. However, it is recommended that you have your ring professionally cleaned at least twice a year—and even more frequently if your band has been exposed to a high amount of debris.

According to Mann, “If you’re particularly active outdoors or in the kitchen and your jewellery has developed a hard, compacted layer of oil or grime, it’s better to have it professionally cleaned at the jewellers, who can use professional-grade products to safely restore the brilliance of the stone.” You may be able to get away with washing it less frequently if you remove it from your body when participating in activities that could damage or dirty it.

Brush the stones with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any remaining grit. The finest ones to use are those that do not have any rubber bristles on them at all. Children’s toothbrushes are typically softer than adult toothbrushes, making them excellent for cleaning diamond rings.

Keep this toothbrush separate from the rest of your toothbrushes and only use it to clean your precious jewelry. It will remain soft and clean for a longer period of time in this manner. Maintaining the lower portion of the diamond is important due to the fact that a great deal of dirt can accumulate around where the diamond is set on the band of the engagement ring.
