Coppelia Ballet Story: Coppélia (sometimes subtitled La Fille aux Yeuxd’Émail (The Girl with the Enamel Eyes) is a ludicrous ballet from 1870 originally framed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of Léo Delibes, with libretto by Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitter. Nuitter’s libretto and mise-en-scène was predicated uponE.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story Der Sandmann (The Sandman). In Greek, κοπέλα (or κοπελιά in some shops) means youngish woman. Coppélia premiered on 25 May 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial del’Opéra, with the 16- span-old Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the presiding position of Swanhilda and ballerina Eugénie Fiocre playing the part of Frantz en travesti.
The costumes were designed by Paul Lormier and Alfred Albert, the scene by Charles-Antoine Cambon (Act I, scene 1; Act II, scene 1), and Édouard Desplechin and Jean-Baptiste Lavastre (Act I, scene 2). The ballet’s first flush of success was interposed by the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris (which also led to the early death of Giuseppina Bozzacchi, on her 17th birthday), but ultimately it turned the most- performed ballet at the Opéra. Coppelia is a captivating, funny and comical ballet for all epochs. The classic ballet is full of humor and ballet copy.
It’s hourly performed by small ballet companies because it does not claim a large cast of world- class cotillion, making it an ideal choice for a small labor. The ballet is about a girl named Coppelia who sits on her deck all day reading and nowise speaking to anyone. A boy named Franz falls deeply in love with her and wants to marry her, yea though he’s before engaged to another woman. His betrothed, Swanhilda, sees Franz throwing kisses at Coppelia. Swanhilda soon learns that Coppelia is actually a doll that belongs to Doctor Coppelius, the fierce scientist.
She decides to impersonate the doll, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but all is soon forgiven. Swanhilda and Franz make up and get connubial. The marriage is celebrated with several jocose cotillions. Coppelia is a classical ballet hung on a story byE.T.A. Hoffmann entitled”Der Sandmann” (“The Sandman”), which was published in 1815. The ballet premiered in 1870. Doctor Coppelius has multiple correspondences to Uncle Drosselmeyer in The Nutcracker. The Coppelia story evolved from traveling shows of the late 18th and early 19th centuries starring mechanical automatons.
New-day outputs are traditionally gathered from the renewals mounted by Marius Petipa for the Imperial Ballet out. Petersburg in the late 19th century. Petipa’s choreography was proved in the Stepanov recipe of the choreographic memo at the turn of the 20th century. These memorandums were thereafter used to mount theSt. Petersburg performance for corresponding companies as the Vic-Wells Ballet ( precursor of moment’s Royal Ballet).
Swanilda and her confidantes search for the girl they saw anteriorly on the sundeck. Notwithstanding, Dr Coppelius returns and chases them – except for Swanilda, who hides – from his house. Franz arrives and Dr Coppelius malevolently endeavours to take his spirit from him and put it into the body of his” descendant”, his most prized possession. Coppelius is jived by Swanilda and thinks his mechanical doll has come to life. The aficionados are reunited and Dr Coppelius is left broken-hearted.
