Brenda Geck and “Family Sins”: Brenda Geck’s True Story: “Family Sins,” featuring Kirstie Alley as evil matriarch Brenda Geck, is one of my favorite Lifetime movies. The Burt family of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the inspiration for this film, was led by their adored mother Frances Burt. It’s the story of Frances Burt, a woman who had numerous biological children and also served as a foster mother to a slew of others. She was physically and emotionally abusive to her children, as well as emotionally and mentally abusing them. She forced them to do crimes by beating and harming them physically in a variety of ways. When they were younger, the youngsters were made to shoplift for her, and as they grew older, they were taught more serious crimes including arson, racketeering, and fraud.

An elderly woman was kidnapped by her family and kept as a slave in their home, where they cashed her Social Security payments and raped the woman regularly. Convicted of kidnapping, benefit fraud, disability fraud, sexual assault, and kidnapping was Frances Burt in 1994. Burt was sentenced to 30 years in jail, but she was released in June 2001 after serving 11 years. She’s currently on probation. If you’re looking for a light-hearted reminder that even the most “together” and “perfect” people can be harboring their darkest secrets, this movie is for you. There is no such thing as judging a book only on the basis of its cover.

The Gecko’s

The Geck family is a well-respected part of the community; they attend church, do yard sales, and even take in foster children. Things are totally different behind the scenes because Brenda Geck (Kirstie Alley) is a cunning company owner who will do anything to maintain her façade while stealing from the tenants she rents properties to. Brenda Geck (Kirstie Alley) is an evil family member who manipulates people.

It’s all about to change when Marie (Deanna Milligan) escapes with her baby as she sets out to expose the Geck family’s sins, not that anyone will listen to her because everyone thinks the Gecs are saints, but it doesn’t stop Marie and she ends up writing to a TV show host who brings her story to the public. Graeme Clifford is the director. Among the cast members are Kirstie Alley, Deanna Milligan, and Kathleen Wilhoite. Kirstie Alley’s Pier 1 commercial appears to have paid off. She reprises her role as a self-absorbed, regressive character in the CBS Sunday night film, “Family Sins.”

Kirstie Alley plays Brenda Geck “the mother” in “Family Sins.” She is disgusting in this movie, which is about two things. Repelling is how I feel about Kirstie Alley’s portrayal of her as a deceitful scumbag who is ruthless in her treatment of Marie and who acts as a sort of crime boss. The other issue is the degree of the nauseating activities they engage in behind closed doors and, most importantly, in their basement. Trust me when I say that the scene where we learn what’s going on in the basement of the family house is going to shock and terrify you. However, “Family Sins” is chock-full of scenes that will leave you sick to your stomach, especially after learning that the plot was based on a true incident.

Is the story of Household Sins based on fact?

Canadian film Household Sins is based on the true story of the Burt family, who appeared to be normal, upstanding citizens but were in fact deeply involved with crime. Her husband and children later assaulted and abused the foster children she took in, and she or he kept a girl in the basement for over twenty years as a slave. Until the child’s daughter was able to contact Rhode Island Attorney Common David Morwitz, the girl remained in the basement. She went on to unearth the horrors of the Burt family.

“Family Sins” actress Deanna Milligan (2004)

To emphasize the depravity of what happens in the Geck household, particularly Brenda’s brutal behaviors, is exactly what “Family Sins” does so well. There are some problems with the movie because it has to jump all over the place in order to pack in so much information and explain how the Geck family got where it is and how much they got away with it. When we go back 15 years, we see how Marie ended up living with the Geck family, and when we go back ten years, we see Brenda teaching Marie how to shoplift and stage a fall in order to fool the security guards. Consequently, “Family Sins” is a film full of frightening moments, interspersed with a minimal storyline to keep the film moving.

Kirstie Alley’s performance as Brenda in “Family Sins,” as I’ve already stated, is totally nasty and unsettlingly believable. Deanna Milligan’s portrayal of an abused foster daughter who wants to flee but is also afraid for her life is one of the best performances in the film. In the end, “Family Sins” suffers from its inability to smoothly transition from one occurrence to the next. However, the purposely awful portrayal by Kirstie Alley and the vile events that took place in the Geck household make it compelling and extremely unsettling to see.
